Michelle Segre "Colony Collapse" 2015

"LABspace, Hillsdale
Originally in Great Barrington, LABspace recently moved over the state line to Hillsdale. But the program of fresh and exciting contemporary art exhibits and events has not changed. Founded and directed by artist and musician Susan Jennings, the gallery has also hosted performance art, readings and experimental music. The current show, open through Aug. 8, pairs sculptures by Michelle Segre and paintings by Erica Svec. Segre is known for her quirky sculptures that incorporate traditional sculpture materials with children's toys, mushrooms, wire and tape. Svec's boldly gestural abstract paintings grew out of her fascination with the mind's ability to create new meanings for things through narrative associations. 2642 NY Route 23, Hillsdale, Columbia County. Hours: 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and by appointment. Free.labspaceart.blogspot.com."

LABspace is very pleased to announce the opening of a sculpture installation by the Louis Comfort Tiffany award-winning sculptor Michelle Segre of Mount Washington, MA and New York, NY. Segre’s sculpture will be joined in the exhibit with paintings by Erica Svec, who lives and works in Brooklyn. The exhibition opens on Friday, July 10th with a reception for the artists on Saturday, July 11th from 12-2pm. The exhibition closes on Saturday August 8th. LABspace is located at 2642 NY Route 23 just west of NY Route 22 in Hillsdale, NY.

Michelle Segre’s entirely singular and quirky sculptures are created from an amalgam of craft materials such as string, chenille stems and yarn along with quotidienne found objects such as her child’s toys or dried mushrooms, all of which she combines with traditional sculpture materials and armatures. The sculptures are giant energy sucking super-nova amoebas (or 3-d representations of a kid’s drawings about such things.)

Erica Svec created fresh and fierce paintings out of her fascination with the mind's ability to re- contextualize words, ideas, objects and images so that new meanings evolve through narrative associations. The bold gestures and marks making in her abstract paintings eventually reveal a surprising representation of out of context combinations of everyday life objects.

LABspace, which recently moved to the Hillsdale General Store building below CrossRoads Food Shop from a former location in Great Barrington, MA, was founded and directed by the artist Susan Jennings. The gallery is dedicated to experiments in curation, exhibiting category-busting and/or materially surprising contemporary art, and hosting performance art, screenings, readings and music that push the boundaries of categorization, participation and/or experience.

The gallery is open Thursdays and Fridays from 1-6pm and Saturdays from 11am-6pm and by appointment via labspaceart@gmail.com.

New Contemporary Art Gallery in Hillsdale, N.Y., to Host Sculpture Exhibition by Peter Dudek

HILLSDALE, N.Y.--LABspace, a newly opened contemporary art gallery in Hillsdale, N.Y.,  will host a sculpture installation by the award-winning sculptor Peter Dudek, who lives and works in Brooklyn and the Berkshires.

The exhibition opens Thursday June 18  with a reception for the artist on Friday June 19 from 6-8 p.m. The exhibition will close on Monday July 6 with a reception for the artist from 2 to 4 p.m.

LABspace is located at 2642 NY Route 23 just west of NY Route 22 in Hillsdale in the Hillsdale General Store building, below CrossRoads Food Shop.

Dudek’s multi-part sculptural installations defy categorization, occupying the space between sculpture and architecture, function and non-function, found and fabricated. Parts of modernist or office furniture and other found objects, hand-fabricated components and drawings, photos and collage are spread, stacked and layered throughout the gallery, forming a diverse array of color-flecked architectural and sculptural bits and pieces.

Dudek’s influences range from a wide assortment of architects such as Corbusier, Louis Kahn, Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright. For the viewer his installations shift between groupings of furniture, architectural models and sculpture.

The artist has exhibited his work for over two decades and has had solo shows in Brooklyn,  (Smack Mellon), Manhattan (Bravin Post Lee), Reykjavik, Iceland (Galleri Skilti/Sign Gallery), Pittsfield, Mass. (Storefront Artists Project) and North Adams, Mass. (Kolok Gallery), among other venues. He is the recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship in sculpture as well as a Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation Fellowship.

LABspace, which recently moved to the Hillsdale General Store building from a location in Great Barrington, Mass., was founded and is directed by the artist Susan Jennings. The gallery is dedicated to experiments in curation, exhibiting category-busting and/or materially surprising contemporary art, and hosting performance art, screenings, readings and music that push the boundaries of categorization, participation and/or experience.

The gallery is open Thursdays and Fridays from 1 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., or by appointment via labspaceart@gmail.com. Please check the website for other days during the summer that the gallery will be open.

LABspace has opened in our new space in Hilldsdale, NY with our first show "Plus One Plus One." The address is 2642 NY Route 23 (just west of NY Route 22.) The show runs through June 11th. Hours are Thursday and Friday 1-6, Saturday 11-6 and by appointment via labspaceart@gmail.com. We are in the same building as the Hillsdale General Store and CrossRoads Food Shop. (By the way, we love our new neighbors and think you will too.)
For Plus One Plus One 7 artists, most of whom are part of a Brooklyn-based art collective called The Art Survivalist Guild, were invited to choose a work and invite one other artist who would invite one other artist to do the same. The work in Plus One Plus One is surprisingly interconnected and seemingly carefully curated. We believe this speaks to what happens when artists are deeply trusted and encouraged to create their own exhibition contexts. We are thrilled with the results.
