Susan Carr attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts for her entire education. As a young mother of three driving from Cape Cod to Boston for classes each day, it was the simplest solution. Carr garnered a BFA in painting, won the fifth year certificate for painting in 1995, and received an MFA in video and photography in 2003. At that time, the Museum School was all about self discovery and discipline. One could study anything from welding to glass work to installation to painting, and Carr did. This time formed core ideas about the work that she makes today. Carr has no fear about trying something new. Being curious about most everything, Carr is a life-long learner. She explores metaphor, naïveté, history, politics, astrology and psychological ideas in her work. Carr stays grounded and finds joy in her relationships with her family, children and grandchildren. Being a mother and grandmother is a vital part of her life and daily practice. She has learned that life truly is art, and that art is the totality of life. For Carr, art has always been a saving grace, a wonderful tool, and best friend. Sharon Louden is a working artist, educator, advocate for artists, editor of the Living and Sustaining a Creative Life series of books, and the Artistic Director of the Chautauqua Visual Arts at Chautauqua Institution. She is a leader with decades of experience as an educator in academia, community builder & catalyst connecting underrepresented artists with established institutions, and collaborator by convening initiatives with siloed stakeholders across the non-profit and business sectors. Her forthcoming book, Last Artist Standing: Artists over 50 will be published in 2023. You can find more information on Sharon and her work at sharonlouden.com. | |
