bring your own copy

Please also check out GUZMAN's feature in Upstate Diary Issue 18

Of their recent work, to be exhibited in Gallery One, GUZMAN write:

Rather than confronting our thoughts and ideas directly, we choose to look at things a bit more obliquely. This approach can raise more questions than answers, and that is our preferred mode of working. We are two photographers who examine the state of the world with a sideways glance.

Thank you Connie and Russell!

See you here soon!

Pearl Cowan: Metamorphosis exhibition checklist

Jaqueline Cedar was born in Los Angeles, CA and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. In 2009 she received an MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University. Recent and upcoming exhibitions include Serious Topics, Los Angeles (2024), Shelter Gallery, New York (2023), Tappeto Volante, Brooklyn (2023), Long Story Short, New York (2023), Shin Haus, New York (2022), Smoke the Moon, Santa Fe (2022), Ladies' Room, Los Angeles (2021), 11 Newel, Brooklyn (2021), Peripheral Space, Los Angeles (2021), Hesse Flatow, New York (2020), Drawer NYC (2020), Field Projects, New York (2020), Underdonk, Brooklyn (2018), and David Risley Gallery Velvet Ropes, Copenhagen (2018). Press includes Artnet, Hyperallergic, Huffington Post, Two Coats of Paint, New American Paintings, Gorky's Granddaughter, Painters' Table, and The Boston Globe.

Cedar's paintings and drawings address uncanny scenarios where characters engage themselves and one another with sincerity and purpose. Moments of desire, self-reflection, and lack of control motivate postures filled with bravado and vulnerability. In October 2019 Cedar launched the curatorial exhibition program Good Naked Gallery. Projects hover around the intimate and awkward with a focus on work that engages tactility, humor, movement, and play.

Susan Still Scott, Seated Painting, 2022

Susan Still Scott, Seated Painting, 2022, oil, acrylic and vinyl paint, rabbit skin glue, canvas, wood, maple veneer, staples, 16 x 8.5 x 8 inches. On view in Arrows in my Quiver through April 28. Inquiries: julielabspace@gmail.com. Full checklist here.

Rooted in the tradition of abstract painting, Susan Still Scott makes constructed paintings that explore how materials communicate, and how formal relationships develop into narratives. Urgency is expressed in quick repairs, ripped edges, and parts that do not quite meet. Colorful exteriors belie an undercurrent of anxiety by reanimating used, neglected or otherwise damaged materials. Structures are covered and revealed by layers of paint, tape and cloth. Scott posits that the presence of a painted object is felt within the body. Through her work, she reflects the contradictory emotional and physical states that shape our lives and decisions.

Susan Still Scott was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and currently lives and works in the Hudson Valley, New York. She has a Bachelors of Fine Art from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and attended Tyler School of Art in Rome, Italy. Scott received a Masters of Fine Art from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. Scott’s first solo exhibition in New York City was at Heskin Contemporary in 2011, entitled Corporeality and Other Things of Grace and Beauty. The title references her ongoing visual play with materials combined with carefully considered responses to modern painterly abstraction. She has exhibited throughout the United States and in Europe. Recently she has shown at several galleries and arts organizations in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and New York. She is the recipient of residency fellowships at Yaddo and The MacDowell Colony.

We met Kianga 15 years ago in the early days of the Bushwick art scene. It has been wonderful to reconnect with her in the Hudson Valley this past year, and we are thrilled to welcome Kianga for her first talk at LABspace.
