New Contemporary Art Gallery in Hillsdale, N.Y., to Host Sculpture Exhibition by Peter Dudek

HILLSDALE, N.Y.--LABspace, a newly opened contemporary art gallery in Hillsdale, N.Y.,  will host a sculpture installation by the award-winning sculptor Peter Dudek, who lives and works in Brooklyn and the Berkshires.

The exhibition opens Thursday June 18  with a reception for the artist on Friday June 19 from 6-8 p.m. The exhibition will close on Monday July 6 with a reception for the artist from 2 to 4 p.m.

LABspace is located at 2642 NY Route 23 just west of NY Route 22 in Hillsdale in the Hillsdale General Store building, below CrossRoads Food Shop.

Dudek’s multi-part sculptural installations defy categorization, occupying the space between sculpture and architecture, function and non-function, found and fabricated. Parts of modernist or office furniture and other found objects, hand-fabricated components and drawings, photos and collage are spread, stacked and layered throughout the gallery, forming a diverse array of color-flecked architectural and sculptural bits and pieces.

Dudek’s influences range from a wide assortment of architects such as Corbusier, Louis Kahn, Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright. For the viewer his installations shift between groupings of furniture, architectural models and sculpture.

The artist has exhibited his work for over two decades and has had solo shows in Brooklyn,  (Smack Mellon), Manhattan (Bravin Post Lee), Reykjavik, Iceland (Galleri Skilti/Sign Gallery), Pittsfield, Mass. (Storefront Artists Project) and North Adams, Mass. (Kolok Gallery), among other venues. He is the recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship in sculpture as well as a Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation Fellowship.

LABspace, which recently moved to the Hillsdale General Store building from a location in Great Barrington, Mass., was founded and is directed by the artist Susan Jennings. The gallery is dedicated to experiments in curation, exhibiting category-busting and/or materially surprising contemporary art, and hosting performance art, screenings, readings and music that push the boundaries of categorization, participation and/or experience.

The gallery is open Thursdays and Fridays from 1 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., or by appointment via labspaceart@gmail.com. Please check the website for other days during the summer that the gallery will be open.
