Installation view of Holiday at LABspace
LABSPACE IS CLOSED THIS WEEKEND, JANUARY 1ST + 2NDHOLIDAY viewing is temporarily paused
Hello friends, We hope that you are all doing well. With heavy hearts, and great caution, we have decided to keep the gallery doors closed this New Years weekend, January 1st + 2nd. Reports from friends, family, and experts alike are concerning— Folks are contracting Covid in record numbers. We do not wish to add to that risk, or to gamble with your health. Thank you for your understanding and patience while we figure out next steps. We may reopen by appointment soon, and potentially extend our Holiday exhibition by a few weeks to allow time for you all to view this joyful installation of 260+ artists. We hope that Covid cases will go back down as we all exercise a bit more caution in the coming weeks. We will update you once we have a plan. Sending love to you all and wishing you joy, peace, and good health in 2022! Happy crazy new year 💫 We look forward to seeing you all again very soon.
Be well and stay safe, our dear friends! xo Ellen Letcher + Julie Torres, LABspace co-directors

Susan Carr attended The School of the Museum of Fine arts Boston at Tufts in 2003 with a semester at Radcliffe and achieved her MFA in Video and photography. She won the prestigious Fifth year Traveling Scholars Award at the same institution in 1995 for painting. Her bachelors award was also attained at The School of The Museum of Fine Arts Boston at Tufts in 1994. Susan works in many mediums including sculpture, painting, the written word, photography and collage. She recently published a small memoir in 2019 called Tensions, a book of prose, poetry, photography and paintings. She is also looking forward to her third solo exhibition at LABspace in Hillsdale New York called Yonder in the fall. Susan also had a successful solo exhibition at Borghi gallery in Southampton New York in the Spring of 2021. Being curious of most everything, Susan is a lifelong learner. She uses archetypes, metaphors, history, naivety and psychological ideas when pursuing her work. These motifs act like springboards for further investigation through medium and material. Susan stays grounded and has found joy through relationships with her family and children. Being a mother has been an indispensable and a vital part of her life and art practice. She has learned daily that life in its many spectrums is art. For Susan art is the totality of life, and that humility and love are crucial ingredients to making work. Art is a wonderful tool, best friend, and saving grace.
Sharon Butler, an American artist and arts writer, is widely known as the founder of Two Coats of Paint, a project which includes an influential art blog, Clubhouse conversations, a small press, and other initiatives. Her anti-heroic abstract paintings, based on daily drawings made in a phone app, are engaged with uncertainty, irresolution, and incompleteness– what, in a 2010 article in The Brooklyn Rail, she called Casualism. She has shown work nationally and internationally, including shows in New York at Theodore Gallery, Rick Wester Fine Art, a couple Art Fairs, Pocket Utopia. Upstate, she has shown with John Davis Gallery in Hudson, and Mattewan in Beacon. Over the years, she has received support from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, and the Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant. Sunnyside is her home, and, thanks to the generosity of the Two Trees Cultural Space Subsidy Program, her studio is down under the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge overpasses in Brooklyn. You can catch Two Coats of Paint conversations in the Clubhouse app every Monday at 11:30 am. |
